Aluminum Recycling
by Hank Happ

Recycling of our aluminum cans continues apace. The redemption amount has been increased to $0.58 per lb for redemptions over 50 lb. (Note -- there are about 32 cans per lb.) We derive significant revenues from this recycling, and recycling helps keep an available supply of aluminum for us and our descendants. Since VENA began its program in January 1998 over two tons of aluminum cans have been collected and recycled. Since 1998 the recycling program has generated over $2500 of income to the organization.

The primary drop-off point is my house - 8705 Ashton Place in Carrington. Simply drop off the bag(s) of cans on the east side of the house. We also have a drop-off point at 8415 Vintage Drive in Vineyard III, and at 9036 Village Avenue in Ventura Village (just behind the fence to the left of the front door). If you drop off your cans at one of these locations they will find their way to my place. Once the cans are dropped off, we wait until there is at least 50 lb, and then deliver them to the redemption center.

I remind one and all to please bring your cans in closed bags. Our winds and rain make life interesting for us with some unclosed bags. As always, crushed cans are best, but we take uncrushed and partially crushed as well. To continue to keep the experience a good one for me and my family, please make sure there is nothing else in the bags but empty aluminum cans (with the only exception being clean aluminum foil).

    1. Nothing means just that. In particular, coffee grounds and/or stale beer make the redemption process particularly unpleasant.

2. Empty means that there is as little residual liquid as possible. I'm sure you can imagine how yucky it is to process cans that are not empty.

3. And aluminum means we cannot recycle tin cans. There is an unidentified dear resident who is dropping off bags of clean vegetable and soup cans mixed in with aluminum cans. We do the best we can to separate them, but if it is hard we just throw the bags away. It is clear that time is being spent by this resident to clean his/her tin cans. If you want to recycle them, please put them out by the curb with the rest of your household recyclables.

Thanks again to one and all who participate, especially those who act as a central spot for their neighborhood, and who actively solicit cans from their neighbors. Your contributions help the environment and your neighborhood. Way to go!

The monies collected through this fund raiser have contributed toward past newsletters, weed spraying and neighborhood block parties. This effort is VENA's only fund-raising effort beyond the voluntary annual $20 dues.
